The skin is the largest organ of the body, all 20 square feet of it. Its main function is to protect you by keeping microbes out and regulating your body temperature. It makes sure that your other organs (heart, lungs, liver etc.), blood and muscles are kept inside. Skin allows us to feel the sensations of touch.Apart from being the body’s protector, your skin is a canvas to show yourself to the world. Skin consists of three layers: -• The epidermis, the outermost layer of skin that contains dead, hardened cells; this is the layer that enables you to present your uniqueness. • The dermis, beneath the epidermis, where connective tissues, hair follicles and sweat glands reside; the collagen and elastin in the dermis gives the skin elasticity and a smooth and firm, appearance.• The hypodermis which is made of fat and connective tissue.If you want to look young, you need to care for all three layers. Here are some tips to prevent pre-mature skin aging:-1. Protect your skin from the sun by finding shade (use an umbrella or hat), covering up with clothing and using water-resistant sunscreen that is at least SPF 30.2. If you smoke, stop. Smoking causes the skin to age quickly, creating wrinkles and a dull complexion.3. Reduce alcohol intake as alcohol dehydrates the skin.4. Eat a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables; avoid sugars and other refined carbohydrates.5. Hydrate your skin by drinking sufficient good quality water.6. Exercise moderately and regularly to improve circulation; this contributes to looking youthful.7. Sleep on your back to avoid lines on your face caused by sleeping on your side.8. Be gentle when washing your face, do not irritate your skin by scrubbing it. Use your fingertips.9. Apply moisturizer every day, the skin needs moisture to stay supple.10. Use skin care products that are appropriate for your skin type.It’s never too early or too late to start taking care of this organ that can keep you looking young for many, many years.
